Sichuan International Studies University

Founded in 1950, Sichuan International Studies University (SISU) is one of the first universities authorized by the Ministry of Education of China to enroll international students. It is the only institution in southwest China specialized in teaching foreign languages such as English, French, German, Japanese, Russian, Spanish, Korean, Italian and Arabic. SISU began to recruit international students in 1983.

One of SISU’s most acclaimed features is its beautiful campus at the foot of Gele Mountain by the Jialing River. Its avenues and streets are lined with evergreen trees, so that its campus imperceptibly blends in with tree-covered rolling hills above it. Its facilities have been designed to complement the natural beauty of its serene environments.

Making full use of its advantages in foreign language education, SISU develops related disciplines in coordination, such as literature, economics, management, law ,pedagogy, philosophy and the liberal arts. At present the university has 22 academic departments and subordinate colleges, 2 independent colleges. It offers undergraduate degrees in 36 programs, 36 master degree programs and 11doctor degrees in foreign language education. It offers 11 foreign language courses. It is engaged in education on different levels and in different forms, embracing post-graduate education, undergraduate education, international student education, continuing education, etc.

The university boasts a strong contingent of devoted, qualified and experienced teachers with a high academic level. Some of the teachers are model teachers and model educators of the national level; some have been granted special allowance by the State Council; some have been granted the title of “experts with outstanding contributions” at the provincial/ministerial level; some are academic leaders at the provincial level; some are famous teachers of the provincial level; and some have been granted the titles of “Chongqing’s model teachers for their fine virtues and ethics”, or “excellent teachers of Chongqing” and other tiles of honor. Besides, some teachers have formed the best education teams of the provincial level.

Inter-college exchanges have been establishes between SISU and about 80 universities around the world. Extensive cooperation and exchanges have been going on between SISU and other Chinese or foreign universities in the training of teachers and the education of teachers and the education of undergraduates and postgraduates. The university is，de facto，the only Chinese university officially recognized by Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie(AUF).In cooperation with education institutions of other countries, SISU has set up some foreign language centers at the college, such as Alliance francaise de Chongqing, the Goethe Language Center, the Russian Language Center, and the Cervantes Institute, and it has established Confucius Institutes at Lome University of Togo, Nizhniy Novgorod Language University of Russia.

International Students’ Department is in charge of teaching and administration of international students at SISU. With modern teaching facilities and a competent teaching faculty, the Department offers different Chinese programs to international students. Most of its teachers have attained certification for teaching Chinese as a Second Language and many of them have taught Chinese abroad; therefore, they have developed effective methods to teach Chinese to foreigners. Since 1983, the Department has offered diverse Chinese courses to students from more than 40 countries, including the United States, Great Britain, France, Germany, Russia, Canada, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Switzerland, Norway, Australia, Poland, Peru, Brazil, Ireland, Viet Nam, New Zealand.

At present, the international students can apply for the Chinese Government Scholarship, Confucius Institute Scholarship and Chongqing municipal government Mayor Scholarship. Besides, SISU has established scholarships for international students.
